A bit about Todd

Todd was born on November 6, 1972, in Montgomery, Alabama.  Born with a defective heart, he underwent open-heart surgery at the University Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama at the tender age of six months. At that time, the Birmingham University Hospital, now known as the UAB Hospital, had the most advanced and state-of-the-art facility available. It was "the" place to be, so to speak. The operation was performed by the renowned pioneer of cardiac surgery, Dr. John Kirklin. Roy Clark, legendary musician, and other notable people from around the world received surgery there as well. Todd's family are native North Carolinians and only lived in Alabama briefly, so it was a miracle that Todd just happened to be born during this time...just a short drive away from the best cardiac hospital available. The Wells family eventually made their way back to Wilson, North Carolina and it is here where Todd grew up. He and his wife, Kristy, and their little boy, Gavin (now 6 years old), now reside in Rocky Mount, NC.

Todd started playing the piano at the age of four. The Wells family just happened to have an old neglected upright piano, one where the keys would stick and a lot of the ivory had either chipped or popped off completely. It was at this piano that little Todd would sit, or stand, and pick out hymns he had heard at church or other tunes that were familiar to him. His mother, realizing his notable gift and interest in music, signed him up for formal piano lessons when he was six years old. He continued these lessons for about six years, playing everything from Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt to Gershwin and Joplin. Having been raised in a Christian home, the old hymns of the church and gospel music in general played an important role in his musical development. In fact, this was his first introduction to the world of music and it still remains his favorite. At age 14 he started playing professionally, accompanying various nationally known gospel groups as well as performing solo. In 2002, Todd graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He majored in classical and jazz piano performance along with jazz composition, arranging, and orchestration. Todd has been employed by both Norwegian and Celebrity Cruise Lines where he performed classical concerts and entertained audiences jazz lounges. In 2007 – 2008 Todd was the pianist/orchestrator at the Roanoke Rapids Theater in North Carolina. During this time he sat in as pianist for The Platters and also had the privilege of opening for musical greats such as Ronnie Milsap, Charlie Daniels, Steven Curtis Chapman, The Oak Ridge Boys, Lorrie Morgan, Delbert McClinton, CTA, and many others. Todd currently stays busy throughout eastern North Carolina working as a side-man and also in his recording studio where he does a good bit of arranging and orchestration, as well as working on new solo piano projects.

His style of playing is often compared to that of Liberace who was one of Todd's early musical influences along with Dino Kartsonakis, Roger Williams, and Floyd Cramer. Later on he was intrigued and inspired by jazz pianists Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, and Art Tatum. Although influenced by these other pianists, Todd has worked very diligently over the years cultivating and developing his own distinct style and sound.

Even though Todd was born with a bad heart, it is in this same heart that God also implanted a special anointing and powerful gift ...the gift of music. "This special gift is something you can't learn, practice, or inherit. It was instilled within my soul by God's own hand. Nothing or no one can take it away."
